ATEX
ATEX stands for “Atmosphères Explosibles,” which means “explosive atmospheres” in French. It is a European standard that defines safety requirements for devices operating in environments where there is a risk of explosion. These devices must meet detailed standards for design, construction, testing, certification, and use. Obtaining an ATEX certificate is essential for both manufacturers and operators of devices used in explosion-risk areas. To gain permission for equipment operation in such zones, strict requirements must be met. In industry, there are two schemes for approving devices for operation: ATEX and IECEx.
EX Zone
EX Zone, or explosion-risk zone, refers to areas where there is a potential risk of explosion due to the presence of flammable substances such as gases, vapors, mists, or dust. The explosion-risk zone is divided into different areas, depending on the type of flammable substances present in a given location. The EX symbol is a sign of explosion protection, aimed at ensuring workplace safety and minimizing the risk of device surface overheating. Devices marked with this symbol are designed not to generate sparks, which helps prevent the spread of potential ignition sources.
